Several of DJI’s drones, including its latest consumer products, are being held back at the US border, the manufacturer said in a blog post today. This appears to be a customs matter and not related to the proposed US legislation (Countering CCP Drones Act) to ban DJI products, which is currently in the US Congress. However, the hold does mean that sales of DJI’s latest Air 3S drone will be delayed, the company told The Verge.
“US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has cited the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) as the reason for the current hold,” the DJI Viewpoints team wrote. “However, this claim made against DJI is completely unfounded and categorically false.”
Describing the situation as a “misunderstanding,” DJI said it is sending documents that comply with the UFLPA. It also said it has no manufacturing facilities in Xinjiang and does not source materials from there, a region that is a red flag for the US in terms of Uighur forced labor violations. It also mentioned that it is not a listed entity under the UFLPA and its supplies “undergo rigorous due diligence by reputable US retailers.” US Customs and Border Protection has not yet commented on the matter.
While the US House of Representatives passed a bill to ban DJI’s drones, the Senate removed that section from the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act. However, it was later reintroduced as an amendment, and it could still make it into the final bill. If that happens, imports of new DJI drones could be prevented, but the ban would not restrict current owners from using them. According to Statista, DJI has a massive share of more than 70 percent of the worldwide drone market as of 2021. That includes up to 90 percent off items favored by public safety officers.
